Emile Cairess qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics after finishing third in the London Marathon.
The 26-year-old completed the race in two hours, six minutes and 46 seconds to secure his place at this summer’s games.
It’s also a time that makes him the second fastest British marathon runner in history behind Sir Mo Farah’s record of two hours, five minutes and 11 seconds.
Alexander Mutiso Munyao of Kenya won this year’s elite men’s race in two hours, four minutes and one second.
Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele finished second, 14 seconds back, with Cairess placing third to earn a place on Team GB for the summer games.
Speaking to the Mirror after becoming the first Briton to finish on the podium since Farah in 2018, he said: “I felt good but it was windy.

“I stuck to my race plan to get to third place. I’m really proud of that. It kind of means I’m selected for the team, I’ll definitely be there.
“I needed to do another marathon before the Olympics, it was a risk that paid off. I don’t think I had the fitness to break the British record.”
British star Mahamed Mahamed finished fourth behind Cairess and is also expected to go to the Olympics in the French capital.
Eliud Kipchoge is the reigning men’s marathon champion as he ran a time of two hours, eight minutes and 38 seconds in Tokyo.
In the women’s London Marathon race, Peres Jepchirchir won in a world record time of two hours, 16 minutes and 16 seconds.
She is the reigning Olympic champion and the Kenyan should be one of the favorites to win in Paris and therefore defend her title.
Sunday’s race in London was the third major marathon of the year and the last before this summer’s Olympics.
The opening ceremony will take place on July 26 and the games will conclude on August 11.
