Zurich Classic 2024: Format

The Zurich Classic is a team stroke event and sees pairs compete over four rounds in two different formats.

The field will compete in the fourball rounds on the first and third days, then in the foursome events for the second and fourth rounds.

There will be a cut after the end of Friday’s second round and 33 teams, plus ties, will advance to the weekend.

This is traditionally a high-scoring affair given that each team effectively has two chances on the best two rounds of the ball.

Last year’s winners, Hardy and Riley, are paired again alongside several impressive pairs in New Orleans.

McIlroy will play with Lowry while Matt Fitzpatrick will play with his brother Alex.

Collin Morikawa and Kurt Kitayama team up and Cantlay partners again with Schauffele after completing T4 in 2023.

Other star names in attendance include Will Zalatoris, Sahith Theegala, Gary Woodland, Wyndham Clark and Nicolai Hojgaard.

Scottie Scheffler, who won the Masters and the RBC Heritage in the past two weeks, is not teeing off while awaiting the birth of his first child.

And heading into the final day, McIlroy and Lowry are just two shots behind the leaders.

Zurich Classic 2024: what did we say?

McIlroy revealed that he and Lowry decided to play while having lunch together.

He told GOLF.com: “I asked him [to play].

“You know, actually, we had a really drunken lunch after the Ryder Cup last year, and I said afterwards, ‘Do you want to play Zurich together?’

“And we said, yeah, let’s do it.”
