Tottenham Hotspur have deleted a tweet after leading rival fans to joke that they will bottle the Champions League this season.
And their north London rivals Arsenal have also found themselves in the crosshairs due to a new advertisement promoting their return to Europa League football.
Spurs take on Ligue 1 side Marseille at home on Wednesday night – live on talkSPORT – in their first game back in the competition for two years.
The club’s Twitter account had built up to the European fixture with plenty of Champions League content.
But one tweet stuck with fans – especially of their rivals – as they eagerly awaited their first group stage match.
“Hotspur Way,” the message read.
However, it was the photo posted with the tweet that caused them to laugh – an image of a Champions League branded bottle placed on their training ground.
Unfortunately for Spurs, after losing to Liverpool in the 2019 final and failing to win a trophy since 2008 despite numerous semi-final and final appearances, the north London club have been labeled a ‘bottle’ by his rivals.
And Tuesday’s bottle-focused tweet inevitably led to trolling from haters, including mockery from ‘Bottleham Hotspurs’.
It’s clear Spurs’ Twitter admin didn’t think about the bottle’s image and connotations as it was quickly taken down – although it remains live on their Instagram page.
Meanwhile, on the red side of north London, Arsenal have also been grilled on social media.
The Gunners missed out on a Champions League place on the Premier League final day last season against Spurs, putting them back in the Europa League.
But while the Gooners have been gutted their side have narrowly missed out on playing in Europe’s most prestigious competition, an advert by BT Sport suggests otherwise.
Fans flocked online to mock the Gunners after the teaser showed a clip of Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale saying: ‘We’re back, baby!
Much to the amusement of rivals, the glover’s shot was followed by a graphic to promote ‘Thursday nights’ – the very day Arsenal fans wanted to avoid in the race for the top four last season.
And Spurs weren’t letting their own online batting distract them from a perfect opportunity to dig the Gunners and remind them that they propelled them to fourth place last year.
Tweeting a picture of the club crest next to the Champions League logo, Spurs copied Ramsdale’s line and simply wrote: “we’re back baby.”
You can hear Tottenham’s Champions League clash against Marseille live on talkSPORT on Wednesday at 8 p.m.during this time Arsenal vs FC Zurich in the Europa League will take center stage at 5.45pm on Thursday.
