Will Mohamed Salah leave Liverpool this summer? What we know and what triggered Jurgen Klopp’s crisis

The future of Mohamed Salah at Liverpool should be talked about during the transfer window for the second summer in a row.

The Reds held out against big bids from Saudi Arabia for their Egyptian talisman last year, but interest continued to wane.

The striker has scored 24 goals and provided 13 assists in 41 games in all competitions this season, but has struggled for form of late.

The 31-year-old missed much of 2024 due to the AFCON and then a troublesome injury and has since been dropped by Jurgen Klopp.

The pair had a heated exchange as Salah prepared to come on as a substitute in the Reds’ 2-2 draw at West Ham recently.

Further question marks were also raised over his future following his comments in the mixed zone after the match, telling the media “if I speak there will be fire”.

With just one year left on his current contract, here’s what we know if Salah will stay to lead the Arne Slot era.

Will Salah leave Liverpool?

As things stand, Saudi Pro League chiefs’ hopes of luring Salah away from Liverpool are fading, talkSPORT understands.

talkSPORT has revealed how the Reds are bracing for a new approach from Saudi Arabia after rejecting a bid of more than £100m from Al Ittihad last year.

Salah remains one of their main targets to attract the Saudi Pro League and follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo and co.

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness even advised Salah to move to Saudi Arabia this summer, saying he had his “head turned”.

The Saudis are preparing an offer – lower than the initial offer – of around £70m plus bonuses in case he becomes available this summer.

However, it is understood that the Saudi leaders’ hopes of signing him in 2024 are dwindling, and it is accepted that Salah is likely to stay at Liverpool for another season.

Liverpool are also confident Salah will extend his stay at Anfield, with new boss Slot keen for him to remain a key part of the team.

What triggered Klopp’s bankruptcy?

The row between Salah and Klopp at the London Stadium has sparked doubts over his future, but talkSPORT understands Liverpool are not worried about the incident changing much, especially given the latter’s imminent departure from Anfield.

Although unconfirmed, reports have emerged that Salah was unhappy at being left out of the starting XI and his lack of interaction with his manager when he was substituted caused the dispute.

Klopp had shaken hands and kissed fellow substitutes Darwin Nunez and Joe Gomez, receiving only a half-hearted punch with his star striker.

Speaking after the match, Klopp said: “We talked about it in the dressing room, but it’s done for me. That’s it.”

Asked if Salah was OK with the situation, Klopp added: “That was my impression, yes.”

Salah has been key to Klopp’s success at Liverpool, scoring 210 goals in 346 games since signing from Roma in 2017.

The two men have won a Premier League, a Champions League, an FA Cup and two League Cups together.

They have just three games left before Klopp bids farewell after nine years of reign.
