Tesla will recall 1,096,762 units of the 2017-2022 Model 3, 2021-2022 Model S, 2021-2022 Model X and 2020-2022 Model Y. The vehicles do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) because the automatic power windows could pinch an occupant if part of a person gets in the way.
Tesla discovered this issue during production testing from August 19 to August 23, 2022. Engineers found that the automatic power window reversing system exhibited “greater than expected variations in response to pinch detection,” according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documentation.

From September 5 to 11, engineers began specifically testing for this issue by checking the company’s models. They found that the pinch and retract detection performance did not match FMVSS requirements. No injuries have been reported as a result of this issue.
The solution was just to change the firmware to make windows behave correctly. Since September 13, newly produced vehicles have the software update. Tesla is sending an over-the-air update to fix affected models that are already on the road.
Tesla has recalled its vehicles several times this year. In May, the company had to repair 130,000 units of the Model 3, Model S, Model X and Model Y because the infotainment system’s processor could overheat during fast charging, causing lag or blanking of the display. An over-the-air update fixed the issue.
Also in May, the company recalled 48,184 Model 3 Performance vehicles because the speedometer may have displayed an incorrect display while the car was in track mode. A software update fixed the problem.
There have also been two recalls regarding Tesla’s Boombox feature. The first was in February to disable the system unless the vehicle was parked. The technician used the external speakers to play music or sounds, which could have obscured the tone of the pedestrian warning system. The second Boombox recall disabled the system when the vehicle was in Summon mode. Both only required software updates to make the vehicles compliant.
