Mark Goldbridge: Jamie Carragher is wrong about Thomas Tuchel – Liverpool would be crazy to choose him over Arne Slot

Liverpool would be crazy to replace Jurgen Klopp with Thomas Tuchel, according to Mark Goldbridge.

The Manchester United fan and YouTube host has rebuffed suggestions from Jamie Carragher that Tuchel would be better suited to the Anfield job than the current favourite, Arne Slot.

Slot is reportedly in advanced talks over a deal that would see him leave the reigning Eredivise champions. Feyenoord and succeed Klopp in the Liverpool dugout.

However, Carragher wrote in his Daily Telegraph column that appointing the Dutch coach represents a huge risk compared to a manager like Tuchel, who has already enjoyed success replacing Klopp at Mainz And Borussia Dortmund.

The Reds legend believes the first ChelseaPSG and soon-to-be former Bayern Munich boss would be better placed to stay Liverpool perform at the highest level and compete for major trophies.

Goldbridge disagrees, however, and admits that Liverpool find themselves in just as impossible a position as their beloved United when it came to finding a replacement for the great Sir Alex Ferguson.

It’s a similar situation to Manchester United in more ways than one. You have Klopp leaving like when Sir Alex left, and we were wrong, so very wrong.

You’ve got this whole manager market that’s not as strong as you’d like when you’re replacing one of the greatest managers in your history, and then you’ve got Slot coming in from maybe the Eredivisie with a really good reputation , as Erik Ten Hagbut now he is under pressure.

I thought Liverpool would choose Ruben Amorim but maybe there is something they are not sure about. They obviously really wanted Xabi Alonso but it’s going to stay where it is, and so you’re going to have to take risks.

I can understand why they do this, and I would definitely go for Slot over Thomas Tuchel.

Slot won two trophies as Feyenoord coach: the Eredivisie title last season and the Dutch Cup this season.

Why would you want to attack Tuchel? I think it’s overrated. Why would you go for the guy who was sacked by Chelsea, PSG and Bayern Munich? Just because of the German connection after Klopp? Doing that seems like a really bad idea to me.

It’s going to be very interesting to watch because it’s a very important decision and there has to be a drop. Which players will stay? How long will this reconstruction take? Where will they end up after Klopp? This is going to be fascinating.

Mark Goldbridge hits back with Erik ten Hag on ‘obsession’ and questions ‘miserable’ fans who didn’t celebrate FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry City

They might get lucky and succeed, but it’s not just the tactics of Slot or whoever comes in, it’s the personality, it’s the mentality. Klopp dominates the media, he dominates the Liverpool fandom, there is mutual respect there and he “gets” Liverpool.

Can they be lucky twice? There must be nervousness among Liverpool fans when you replace someone of Klopp’s stature.

Don’t blame Darwin, the third one is about right

I look at this Liverpool team and I think if Jurgen Klopp doesn’t go, they would be much better next year. They’re a good team, but they’re an inexperienced team and it’s still very early in their transition.

In the current state of football, people always want to blame someone, and blaming Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz or anyone else for missing chances when they should be scoring is naive.

Liverpool are not Man City and they are not Arsenal, they are not yet at that level. I know they have been in the past, but this is a new Liverpool team that Klopp was building.

I think they have had a very good season, the only disappointment is that they are not going to give Klopp what he deserves in his final year with the club.

When you actually look at the team and where they are coming from with their midfield rebuild, finishing third after struggling for the title until the end of April would be a very good place to build this summer.

But it was the whole Klopp affair that led to this huge disappointment.
