The updated Tesla Model 3 “Highland” went on sale in the United States in January. So it was only a matter of time before a new Performance model followed suit. It’s finally here, and Tesla is calling it the most powerful Model 3 yet.
The new Model 3 Performance develops 510 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. That gives it a 0-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds (the previous model did it in 3.1 seconds) and a top speed of 163 miles per hour.
The Model 3 Performance uses Tesla’s new fourth-generation drive unit, which generates improvements of 22% in continuous horsepower, 32% in peak horsepower, and 16% in peak torque. And all this while offering a range of 296 miles.
But it’s not just about speed. Tesla has improved the suspension for better body control with a new Track mode with adaptive dampers. Track V3 mode also tweaks the powertrain. New high-performance brakes provide crisper pedal feel, improved stopping power and better heat management. New 20-inch forged wheels also help reduce weight.
Slight visual changes to the front and rear fascias differentiate the Performance model from the rest of the Model 3 lineup, while also reducing drag. The new diffuser and a carbon fiber spoiler allow a reduction in drag of 5 percent and a reduction in lift of 36 percent compared to the previous Performance model.
These carbon fiber accents are carried throughout the cabin with a unique woven pattern on the dashboard. That extra carbon fiber inside comes with sporty bucket seats that feature improved bolstering and a ventilation feature.
Tesla offers its fully autonomous driver assistance technology on the Model 3 Performance for $8,000 more, while paint options like Deep Blue Metallic and Ultra Red cost between $1,000 and $2,000 more.
The new Tesla Model 3 costs $54,380 with destination. And yes, it still qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit. You can order your new Model 3 Performance today, Tesla just requires a $250 deposit.
