Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was hospitalized just days after his 2020 rape conviction was overturned in New York, his lawyer said.
Arthur Aidala said he was transferred to a Manhattan hospital on Friday. He remains in prison after being convicted of rape in Los Angeles.
Mr Aidala said his client was “a bit of a wreck from a health point of view”.
“It looks like he needs a lot of help physically. He has a lot of problems,” he told AP.
Later, in a statement to CBS, the BBC’s US partner, Mr Aidala said Mr Weinstein had been taken to hospital after the New York City Department of Corrections determined he needed “immediate medical attention”.
“A myriad of tests are being performed on Harvey and he is being kept for observation,” he said.
A corrections department spokesperson said Weinstein remains in custody at Bellevue Hospital.
He was transferred to the Rikers Island Correctional Complex on Friday from Mohawk Correctional Facility where he had been since 2023.
Weinstein’s lawyers have previously said the former film producer suffered from a series of health problems, including diabetes, sleep apnea and problems affecting his heart and eyes. In 2020, he spent five days in the hospital for ongoing heart problems and chest pain.
Mr. Aidala said he was scheduled to meet with Weinstein on Monday before his court appearance on Wednesday, the Associated Press reports.
Earlier in the week, the New York Court of Appeals overturned Weinstein’s conviction on the grounds that he did not receive a fair trial, saying prosecutors in the crucial #MeToo case had called for witnesses whose accusations were not part of the charges against him.
The court said this meant he had been unfairly judged for his past behavior and ordered a retrial.
At his 2020 trial, Weinstein was convicted of sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006 and raping Jessica Mann, a former aspiring actress, in 2013. He was jailed for 23 years.
Weinstein’s defense team has said the sexual relations between the film director and the accusers were consensual.
Separately, Weinstein was sentenced last year in California to 16 years in prison for raping an Italian model and actress in a Beverly Hills hotel in 2013.
