A man set himself on fire outside the New York courthouse where former US President Donald Trump is on trial.
The man was in a protest zone reserved for pro- and anti-Trump demonstrators, in front of the Manhattan courthouse.
The New York Police Department said it had launched an investigation after its officers responded to a fire near 80 Center Street at around 1:37 p.m. local time (6:37 p.m. UK time).
Police added that the man was taken to hospital and is in critical condition.
It comes after jury selection for Trump’s secret trial ended with 12 people, and six alternatives, chosen to decide whether the former US president concealed payments made to women who claimed to have had affairs with him.
Footage shared on social media shows a man lying on his back on the sidewalk outside the courthouse while the lower part of his body is on fire.
Another man sprays him with a fire extinguisher which appears to put out the fire.
Police officers are seen rushing to the scene as the fire is put out.
The former US president was preparing to leave the courthouse before the man set himself on fire.
Onlookers saw the man dousing himself with liquid before the fire.
He also allegedly threw leaflets in the air before setting himself on fire.
There was a heavy police presence outside the courthouse due to the high-profile nature of the trial.
