Alycia Baumgardner had a lot to say in the build-up to her fight with Mikaela Mayer, but now the Colorado resident cheered.
On September 10, we’ll see a historic all-women’s boxing card unfold at London’s O2 Arena, with Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall headlining in a battle for the undisputed world middleweight titles.
In the chief support, Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner will face off for the unified WBC, WBO and IBF super featherweight world titles and the build-up has been heated.
It started when Baumgardner started referring to Mayer as ‘Mcfat’ and she suggested her rival would struggle to gain weight.
Mayer has now hit back, calling Baumgardner ‘pathetic’, as she told talkSPORT, “It’s just funny, I’m a champion for a reason, I’ve been doing this for a really long time, I’ve gained a lot of weight times and I have the best team around me helping me do it.
“So if she’s looking at it like it’s going to be my downside, she’s got something else coming.
“Calling me ‘Mcfat’ is ridiculous and she’s making herself look like an idiot, we all know I’m not fat.
“It’s not my kind of shit, I speak the facts and she may not like it, but everything I said is factual, it’s just the truth.
‘She likes to backfire and talk about my appearance and talk about my body and make these comments that are pathetic, honestly, because she can’t think of anything else, so it just shows her maturity and where she’s at. is mentally. .”
Mayer went on to describe how she thinks the fight with Baumgardner will end.
“I think Baumgardner likes to keep her space,” Mayer said, “she wants you right in front of her so she can land her big shots.
“She doesn’t like pressure and she doesn’t like being supported and I don’t have that style.
“I’m not going to allow him to stay in his comfort zone, that’s not me.
“I have second, third and fourth gear, I press my opponents, close that space and put them to work and I think I have a huge work rate, so we’ll see if she can keep up.
“I think I’m definitely his biggest test,” Mayer continued. “I have a long resume and I’ve accomplished a lot as an amateur.
“I’ve been 17-0 in the pros against a lot of different styles, so I don’t necessarily think she’s had the testing and the challenges that I’ve had when it comes to opponents.
“Whether she believes it or not, I’m definitely the most talented fighter she’s ever faced and it’s definitely going to be a tough fight for her.”
We’ve seen Baumgardner box on these shores before, when she took on fan favorite Terri Harper and picked up a shock stoppage victory.
Harper was seen as the superior boxer going into the fight, but it only took one punch for Baumgardner to turn things around due to her considerable power, although that wasn’t a concern for Mayer.
“If I was afraid of getting hit, I wouldn’t be in this sport,” Mayer said. “I would have stopped showing up a long time ago, so that’s nothing new.
“I’m not scared. That’s her biggest strength, but she has to be ready to land those big shots and with my style, I’m not going to allow her to get ready.
