For those who have already forgotten, BMW’s foray into the era of electric vehicles was led by a small sedan called the i3. The city runabout looks unassumingly cute on the outside and seems to do just fine within the confines of the urban jungle, but apparently it can be fun on the trail too.
Stighiz from YouTube shows us how it’s done inside his BMW i3 while doing various hot laps at the Nürburgring. Yes, several, as the driver said he was able to complete three laps on a single full charge.

According to the owner, this BMW i3s is completely original, so no modifications have been added to make it a track weapon.
As a sportier version of the i3, the i3s is powered by BMW’s eDrive synchronous permanent magnet motor which produces 181 horsepower (135 kilowatts) and 199 pound-feet (270 Newton-meters) of instant torque. It also has lower sport suspension, quicker acceleration, Sport drive mode and wider rear track, wheels and tires compared to the standard version.
We don’t know if this ring-conquering i3 was already equipped with the larger battery from the 2019 model, but the owner says a full charge is good for three hot laps. That’s pretty impressive, especially for a small car with a small but bigger 42.2kWh battery (for 2019).
In case you were curious about the track experience with the little EV, the driver generously provided some commentary. According to him, the chassis of the i3s was good but corners should be approached with caution. The brakes also worked well, complemented by the EV’s regenerative braking.
The driver also gave cons, such as ESP unnecessarily intervening and the i3s being sluggish, citing two sections in the ‘Ring that “felt like an eternity”.
Again, the BMW i3s is not a track toy, so that’s to be expected. As they say, it is more fun to drive fast slow cars than slow fast cars.
