The Cybertruck finally gets an off-road mode with locking differentials

The Tesla Cybertruck arrived about five months ago, but it’s missing some key features you’d expect to find on a modern pickup. That will soon change with a software update that allows the electric pickup’s locking differentials and other off-road features to help owners avoid embarrassment on the trail.

The new features are accessed via the new off-road mode, which improves handling on rocks, gravel, deep snow and sand. Locking differentials are available on the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive model. The three-motor truck features a front locking differential, while a virtual rear locked differential is always activated in Overland mode.

Trail Assist makes it easier to manage low-speed driving on uneven surfaces so the driver can concentrate on steering and keep it on the right side. A new Baja mode improves vehicle balance and handling when the driver sets stability assist to Minimal.

It works with hill climb and hill descent control, but not all the updates make it a better off-roader. Tesla also improved the truck’s ability to estimate a payload and adjust the adaptive suspension accordingly.

The Cybertruck also performs better on slippery surfaces, and a new CyberTent mode levels the suspension so you can sleep on a flat surface. It also keeps the lights on and the outlets powered.

Tesla said on X (Previously Twitter) that over-the-air updates “will be rolling out soon.”
