Dietmar Hamann believes the decision to allow Pep Lijnders to write a tell-all book on Liverpool while he was still at the club should have raised alarm bells for supporters.
The Reds are off to a difficult start to the season having recorded just two wins in six Premier League games so far this season.
Their Champions League campaign didn’t get off to an ideal start either, with Jurgen Klopp’s side losing 4-1 to Napoli on Wednesday night.
As a result, Liverpool are facing criticism as pressure mounts for the club to improve their results.
Klopp’s number two Lijnders has published a book called ‘Pep Lijnders: Intensity – Inside Liverpool FC’ about the Merseysiders’ successes in the 2021/22 campaign, a title which has been backed by the club itself.
The book description says: “Pep takes readers behind the scenes at Anfield, the AXA academy and the team hotel; on the field, in the dugout and back in the locker room away from the media’s gaze”.
Books of this type are common in top-level professional football, but revealing behind-the-scenes information and anecdotes while staying at a club is highly unusual.
This is why, according to Hamann, the book published by assistant coach Lijnders was concerning.
Posting on Twitter, Hamann said: The alarm bells should have rung for Liverpool fans when the current assistant manager wrote a book while still employed by the club.
“How he was allowed to do that, I’m not too sure.”
A football fan posted the posters of the Man City, Tottenham and Arsenal All or Nothing documentaries as a response.
This apparently indicated their rejection of that claim, but Hamann added, “I don’t know where you see a comparison. Club documentary against an individual who is an assistant manager writing a book by himself telling everyone how awesome he is.
