Windows 10 users have had more problems with updates in the past few months, with the optional KB4535996 causing the most recent issues. However, some Windows 10 users have also encountered issues during manual driver installation, which caused a warning from Microsoft.
We are not talking about drivers that are downloaded and installed automatically from Windows Update; this specifically relates to the drivers that you downloaded directly from a device manufacturer and choose to install yourself. Updated drivers are essential for keeping your system running at peak performance and can provide critical performance improvements or security improvements. So anything that prevents this mechanism from working properly is a huge concern for PC users.
In this case, Microsoft states that a problem with the “Memory Integrity” setting prevents some drivers from loading correctly. The actual driver installation appear to finish without a hitch, but there are underlying issues that prevent it from interfacing with your hardware.
“If you choose to continue using your device without solving the driver problem, you may find that the functionality supported by the driver no longer works, which could have consequences ranging from negligible to severe,” warns Microsoft. .
Until Microsoft can release an appropriate fix for this driver installation problem – which hopefully won’t introduce any new problems – the company offers a workaround that simply disables the integrity of Memory. To do this, you can follow these steps:
- Open the Start menu and go to Settings
- Click Update & Security, then go to Windows Security
- From there you’ll need to access device security
- Next, search for Core Isolation, then turn off memory integrity
- You will then need to perform a full reboot in order to make the changes to your system
Microsoft adds: “Although the driver has a minor vulnerability that prevents it from loading, it is probably not malicious at all.” It’s worth noting that Microsoft is apparently the responsibility of the hardware manufacturers, as it also states: “If an updated driver is not available from the driver manufacturer, it may be a good idea to contact them and find out if a fix is available soon. “
