Jennifer Lawrence is under fire after claiming leading roles for women in action movies never existed before her casting in the Hunger Games franchise.
The outrage began Wednesday morning after an interview between Jennifer and actor Viola Davis on Variety’s Actors on actors hit the internet.
While Jennifer attempted to claim that the roles of women and men in Hollywood generally differ unfairly, she shared an embarrassing and inaccurate fact that has caused anger and shock among social media users.
Much to Twitter’s horror, Jennifer proclaimed in the interview: “No one had ever put a woman at the head of an action film” before her role as Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games series.
The popular Hunger Games films, based on the young adult novels by Suzanne Collins, follow teenagers from each of Panem’s 12 districts who are randomly chosen to fight to the death.
“We were told that girls and boys can identify with a male role, but boys cannot identify with a female role,” the 32-year-old continued.
“It makes me so happy every time I see a movie come out that crosses each of those beliefs and proves that it’s just a lie to keep some people out of movies. To keep some people in the same jobs they always have busy.
The Causeway star’s comments quickly went viral, with Twitter users expertly pointing out a myriad of female actors who have helmed action movies and even entire franchises in the past.
“Now how could Jennifer Lawrence sit here and say there was no female lead in an action movie until she was in the Hunger Games… so what were Pam Grier, Sigourney Weaver, Uma Thurman and Mila Jovovich doing?” a Twitter user wrote.
another user tweeted“Lawrence is apparently so obsessed with herself that she forgets that a ton of other women have been cast as leads in action movies: Linda Hamilton, HELLO. Sigourney Weaver? Angelina Jolie? Halle Berry? Uma Thurman and the ladies of Kill Bill? “DEATH PROOF” CASTING? Laurent is annoying.
Another Twitter user had a screenshot of Tweet from Variety since deletedfeaturing Lawrence’s controversial claim.
On the other hand, several fans rushed to defend the Oscar-winning actor across the platform.
“Everyone is trolling J-Law for this, but it’s pretty clear that she shares (with great derision) what was told to her and her team by studio executives, not what she thought at the time,” a fan said. wrote.
Another one tweeted in his defense that the “controversy is stupid” around the actor’s statement: “Yes, Jennifer Lawrence is wrong about female-led action movies, but her main thesis is correct. Engage with that, maybe you’ll learn something.
