The cadence of new model launches rarely ceases, and that’s certainly true at Mercedes. We caught the automaker readying the new CLE-Class for its grand debut, even taking spy shots of the hot ’63 AMG CLE. A new batch of photos capture the tamer AMG variant, the CLE, for the first time. 53.
The new photos show the coupe, which will also be available as a convertible, looking a lot like its hotter sibling. However, there are distinct differences that reveal that this example falls below CLE 63 in the hierarchy. The CLE 53 features rounded quad tailpipes in the rear, while the CLE 63 has square ones. That won’t be the only style difference, though. The AMG CLE 53 is expected to adopt a tame overall design, which we won’t get to see until the vehicle starts to lose some of its camouflage.

It’s unclear what type of powertrain the CLE 53 will feature, but we expect the hotter CLE 63 to eventually get the hybrid powertrain from the new AMG C63 SE Performance. The setup combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a rear-mounted electric motor. The car packs a punch, delivering 671 horsepower and propelling the car to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) in 3.3 seconds. The CLE 53 might feature a detuned version of this powertrain, but that’s pure speculation.
The new CLE will likely replace the C- and E-Class coupes and convertibles in the Mercedes lineup. The new model will ride on the automaker’s MRA-2 platform that underpins the new C-Class, so we’d expect the two to share powertrains across the model range. The interiors should also be similar.
Mercedes has not announced when it will unveil the new CLE-Class. We thought it could happen before the end of the year, but time is running out. The regular CLE is expected to debut before the hotter AMG variants, which could arrive in 2023. That means the AMG variants would likely arrive as 2024 models. We’ll be keeping an eye out as winter approaches.
