Matty Healy reportedly did not sign a non-disclosure agreement during his brief fling with Taylor Swift and is now free to write his own songs about their romance.
1975 singer Matty, 35, was surprisingly at the center of Taylor, 34,’s heartbreaking album, released last week to rave reviews.
Matty and Taylor dated briefly following her split from longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn last year and despite the short relationship, many of the songs on the record appear to be about him.
Now, insiders say The Tortured Poets Department album has given Matty plenty of food for thought about whether he wants to give his own insight into their turbulent romance.
” Matty is currently keeping a low profile working on The 1975’s next album. This time last week, he had no idea he was about to become one of the most talked about men on the planet,” a source told The Sun.
Matty Healy didn’t sign a non-disclosure agreement during his brief fling with Taylor Swift, so he’s now free to write his own songs about their romance, according to reports.
1975 singer Matty, 35, was surprisingly at the center of Taylor, 34,’s heartbreaking album, released last week to rave reviews (seen in New York last May).
“He chose to remain silent, but no NDA was signed. Like Taylor, he uses his music as a form of release and storytelling, this has naturally led him to reflect on their time together and he has never been one to hold back when speaking his mind.
“Just like Taylor, he has moved on and is very happy with his current relationship with Gabbriette Bechtel, but nothing stops him from writing about his romance with Taylor and having a say in what she said to his subject.”
The insider added that fans should look forward to the release of the group’s next album.
MailOnline has contacted representatives for Matty and Taylor for comment.
It comes as Matty broke his silence on Wednesday over the music which documents their failed romance.
Fortnight (feat. Post Malone) and particularly The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived seem to reference the star and the heartbreak Taylor felt when things ended.
Asked Wednesday by an Entertainment Tonight reporter what he thought of the “diss track,” Matty responded politely: “I haven’t really listened to much of it but I’m sure it’s good.”
Matty and Taylor dated briefly following her split from longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn last year and despite the short relationship, many of the songs on the record appear to be about him.
Taylor is now romantically involved with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
The singer, who briefly dated Matty last spring, is widely believed to be targeting him in the song The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, among others, released, prompting fans to take a second look at the period during which she was dating with the leader of 1975.
Taylor’s 11th album, The Tortured Poets Department, was released last Friday as speculation that the dissident song was about Matty reached fever pitch around the world.
The lyrics refer to a man dressed in a “Jehovah’s Witness costume” and “rusting my (Swift’s) sparkling summer”.
Matty is known for wearing distinctive black suits to concerts and the couple reportedly split in June 2023.
According to Us Weekly, her reaction was positive and those close to her “couldn’t be happier” with the outcome of the record.
A source said on Saturday: “Matty still thinks very highly of Taylor but we were all nervous about what she might have said on the album.
“Matty’s family feared Taylor would tear him apart. Matty has had a hard time living in the public eye, and he’s doing great, but the last thing he needs is every Swiftie in the world thinking he’s a bad guy.
Another insider told the publication, “He was concerned their story would be presented in a negative light,” but he was “really grateful for the information” he received from Taylor.
It came after Matty’s family gave a harsh assessment of his ex Taylor after she appeared to savage him on his new album.
Her aunt seemed dismissive of Taylor’s openness about her exes, including Matty, when she spoke to MailOnline. He is now believed to be dating model Gabbriette Bechtel – who his aunt says he is “very happy” with.
Debbie Dedes said of Matty’s reaction: “Nothing surprises him anymore.
“He won’t be surprised by the song. He and she know what happened.
And Debbie, who as the sister of Matty’s famous mother Denise Welch, has known Matty since he was born, continued: “She writes about all of his relationships, doesn’t she?
“I don’t think it will shock him at all.
“He’s very happy in his new relationship so I’m sure he’ll focus on that.”
And hinting that Matty has his own version of the relationship that he has been too respectful to share publicly, Debbie added: “As his nephew, we know a little more about what happened than what been said in the press.”
Other lyrics in the song suggest that the anonymous subject of the title “tried to buy pills” and “was no match for a man.”
Healy has openly spoken about his drug problems in the past and has said in interviews that he was tired of speculation about his height, saying he was 5’1″ tall but was dwarfed by the other members from The 1975.
He told The Fader in 2018: “Everyone in [the 1975] I’m 6 feet 4 inches tall and I’m 5 feet 10 inches tall, so everyone thinks I’m 5 feet 5 inches tall.
It is widely believed that the singer targets her ex in the song The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, which has sparked some wild fan theories.
Swift found herself in a whirlwind romance with Healy — although neither was ever directly confirmed — which began in April 2023 after they were seen kissing in New York.
But the affair ended as quickly as it began after Healy’s “bad boy” image and “racist” remarks sparked backlash from Swift.
Taylor is now romantically involved with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, but it’s clear she still has some bones to pick with the “worst men” in her life.
Swifties have been furiously speculating about the potential targets of the singer’s songs on the new album – which was initially released as a 16-song volume before a surprise 15-song extra release arrived two hours later .
The singer, who has reinvented herself over the years as a pop icon and more recently as a folk and indie voice of introspection, describes the album as capturing a “fleeting, fatalistic moment – a moment at both sensational and painful in equal measure. ‘
She added in an Instagram post: “This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter is closed and doomed.
“There is nothing to avenge, no score to settle once the wounds have healed. And upon reflection, many of them turned out to be self-inflicted acts.
“This writer firmly believes that our tears become holy as ink on a page. Once we tell our saddest story, we can free ourselves from it.
“And then all that’s left is tortured poetry.”
Many of the songs – and the album title itself – are believed to refer to actor Joe Alwyn, who dated Swift for six years – but fans have speculated that several songs are also about Matty.
