Chelsea’s superb performance against Everton was marred by a fiery brawl involving Nicolas Jackson.
The Blues were leading 4-0 when Cole Palmer was brought down in the penalty area on the hour mark.
Noni Madueke collected the ball to take the kick, before Nicolas Jackson grabbed the ball to take it for himself.
In the end, Palmer, who is Chelsea’s designated penalty taker, collected the ball and headed towards the penalty spot, leaving Jackson furious as he tried to get the ball for himself.
Palmer then pushed Jackson away as he put the ball on the spot, which infuriated Madueke and Jackson even more, with Conor Gallagher having to get involved to stop them bickering.
Palmer, who was already on a hat-trick, stepped up and coolly converted his effort and walked away to celebrate, but the drama was not yet over with Jackson initially refusing to celebrate the goal.
In the end, Madueke and Malo Gusto’s words convinced him to go and congratulate Palmer for his effort, with the striker still unhappy at being denied the chance to take the penalty.
The moment was a minor incident in an otherwise flawless evening for Chelsea.
Sitting in ninth position, the Blues are just three points off sixth in the table with at least one game in hand on the teams standing in their way.
With Palmer now joint-top scorer in the Premier League alongside Erling Haaland, they will after all be confident of bringing European football to Stamford Bridge next summer.
