Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Borussia Mönchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram in the upcoming January transfer window.
Thuram is out of contract at the end of this season and will become a free agent in June 2023.
The Sun claim Newcastle are watching him and ‘could’ submit a bid for him this winter.
Speaking earlier this month about January, Eddie Howe said: “We haven’t really had those discussions yet. I don’t know when we need to have these discussions in January, but, of course, we will at some point.
“There is still time, and my priority is always the players we have here. We still have a few players that we need to be in top form, that we have missed, that we think could make a huge difference for us. It’s an exciting prospect.
“We have financial fair play, those dreaded words, and I don’t know what limits that puts on us for January.
“There’s a lot to discuss, but I think my main goal at the moment is to try to get the players we have in the best possible condition when the season resumes.”
Newcastle will resume their season with a Carabao Cup draw against Howe’s former club Bournemouth in the week before Christmas. The club also lined up friendlies against Al-Hilal and Rayo Vallecano for the break.
“I might enjoy a few days off, but the challenge is to come back and make sure we’re on the right path,” Howe said.
What’s up with Ronaldo?
Manchester United are reportedly planning to terminate Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract following a recent media interview with Piers Morgan.
Ronaldo slammed Manchester United owners in interview, saying they ‘don’t care about the club’ he felt ‘betrayed’ after returning last summer
And on Friday morning, Man United released an official statement which read: “Manchester United have taken appropriate action this morning in response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent media interview. We will make no further comment until this process is completed. will not have succeeded.”
According to reports from Mail Online, the ‘appropriate action’ is to terminate Ronaldo’s contract at Old Trafford due to breach of contract. The 37-year-old still has 18 months left on his current deal which could be worth up to £500,000 a week.
It is understood that Ronaldo has planned an exit from the Red Devils with his agent Jorge Mendes speaking to a number of clubs over the possibility of a January transfer, including Newcastle United.
