Man City have apologized after telling fans on Twitter they could not bring sunscreen to the Etihad Stadium this weekend.
City beat Bournemouth 4-0 in the scorching heat on Saturday, when temperatures topped 31 degrees.
A post from verified account @mancityhelp responded to a fan’s request on Twitter ahead of the Premier League game, saying: “Sunscreen will not be permitted on entry to the stadium.
“We advise supporters to apply it before coming and to bring a hat and water.”
However, City said the advice given by the club’s supporter services team on Twitter was incorrect and apologized for an “administrative error”.
Melanoma UK, the country’s leading melanoma patient organisation, called City’s apparent policy “disappointing” and “very worrying”.
He said, “Really? You won’t allow sunscreen in the stadium? What is the explanation?
“You must be aware of the increase in skin cancers and the danger of UVA & UVB? Not here to criticize, but it is very disturbing. Glad to work with you in outreach. Many footballers have had melanoma.
“Your fan services team got it wrong. You can’t expect a stadium full of fans (many of them children) not to have sunscreen with them.
“Help them protect them – partner with someone who can provide sunscreen inside the stadium. It’s so disappointing.
City clarified their position on Sunday, saying: “Manchester City can confirm that fans were allowed to bring sunscreen into the Etihad Stadium for Saturday’s game.
“The tweet in question, which was posted in response to an inquiry into the club’s Twitter account on the day of the match, was incorrect, and we would like to apologize to the supporters for this administrative error.
“The health and safety of supporters is our priority and we will ensure that internal processes are reviewed following this matter.”
