Low spear tell People magazine that he was surprised by the support he received when he finally came out as gay in 2006.
Lance, who is now married to Michael Turchinwith whom he shares two children, recounts when the original People The article with his revelation came out, “everything in my life has changed.” And while some of the changes were bad, like the loss of a sitcom, he was surprised by the support he felt.
“I didn’t expect the rest of the world to treat it in a positive way,” he says. “The industry said, well, we can’t use you now. But the audience – they made it such a positive thing.
He adds: “Once I could see that reaction, I felt so good that I wasn’t going to be hated anymore.”
And some of that support came from the music legend Elton Johnwho sent Lance a gift after the news broke.
“The funniest thing I got after I came out was a cute gift basket – I think on my stoop – and it was from Elton John that basically said, ‘Welcome to the club,'” Lance shares.
“I thought, ‘Wow, I got a welcome basket from the king of the gay mafia,'” he adds. “I’m like, ‘I’m in!’ I thought it was the most fun and welcoming basket you could ever get.
