Coi Leray reflected on his early career, discussing the pressures of emulating some of the industry’s biggest pop stars.
During a livestream on Tuesday (April 23), the “Players” artist recounted the advice she received from her former label, Republic Records. According to the newcomer, she was asked to channel her upcountry crossover star Taylor Swift and Nickelodeon star-turned-chart-star Ariana Grande.
“I’m not on Republic Records anymore, I’m on Island [Records],” she began. “When I let go Blue Moon, Republic – they wanted pop shit. They wanted Taylor Swift shit, Ariana Grande shit, which I can do, but I always like to work at my own pace and at my own pace, and I’m always developing and learning my own sound and all that…
“THE Blue Moon shit, they didn’t like it. I wouldn’t say they didn’t like it, but it was something they didn’t want to put money into. So when I have to come out of my own pocket and invest my own money in my own music, you have to make concrete decisions.
Speaking about her versatility – her ability to sing, rap and vary her style – she acknowledged that not everyone likes “every Coi in the pond.”

Coi’s moment of reflection comes hot on the heels of announcing his move to Island Records earlier this year.
In late January, Coi released his first single under the label, a track titled “Wanna Come Thru”, produced by Mike Will Made-It.
“This song is about me being grown up and sexy,” Coi explained in a statement. “Developed and sexy means being so in love with yourself – that it’s one of the sexiest, most mature, most grown-up things a woman can do. [be]. As you get older and tap into your womanhood and femininity, I feel like you should embrace it.
“It’s good for you; look in the mirror and love yourself. 2024 will be my adult and sexy time. I’m taking over this year. I have so much new music and a whole new side of me to discover.
Mike Will Made-It also hailed Coi’s latest album as a “culture-changing record”, stating: “The song is just fresh and cutting edge. What I like about it is that it seems simple and easy to digest and instantly puts you in a good mood. It’s the best feeling ever to be able to create a song that makes the listener feel good.
He confidently predicted: “This is the #1 fasho hit, we have many more on the way.” »
