Andy Goldstein and Jason Cundy paid tribute to regular Sports Bar caller Tony Tempah by dedicating Thursday night’s show to the avid Liverpool fan, sadly deceased.
The Sports Bar duo have an engaged following, with many regulars calling the show to express their opinions, which typically range from the hilarious, the sublime to the downright ridiculous.
Tony was a favorite of the two presenters – just a few months ago he phoned to claim his beloved Liverpool ‘was not a money club’ … and proceeded to be torn to shreds.
But Goldstein and Cundy were saddened to learn of his recent death, and both hosts were deeply moved as they thanked him for being part of ‘the Sports Bar family’ and paid tribute to his entertaining contribution to the show. over the years.
Andy Goldstein said: “Regular listeners to the Sports Bar will know familiar names when they call. We have Jackie who phones a lot, Stephen Klopp, Heathrow Rich, if I don’t mention your name, I apologize.
“The Sports Bar looks a lot like family because we know them so well and they know us so well.
“The sad news I have to tell you is one of the Sports Bar family, who was a huge fan of the show and called on several times and had a lot of fun with him, was Tony Tempah who passed away this week. We learned this from one of his relatives who called us with the news and it hit us pretty hard actually.
“We never met Tony but we were always talking about the possibility of him, Jackie and Stephen Klopp coming in what would have been this Christmas before COVID hit. In honor of Tony Tempah’s passing, we’re going to dedicate tonight’s show to him. It will be called the Tony Tempah Sports Bar for the next three hours.
“The first time I remember Tony called he screamed and yelled at us. We didn’t know who he was and I think he scared me, actually, because he had a pop between us both.
“I don’t remember what it was about – we probably had a pop at his beloved Liverpool.
“Over the years we have gotten to know him and his dog Shankly who sadly passed away a few weeks ago and he has become a real star of our show and one of our favorites.
“It saddens me to think that we’ll be without him from this point on because the show was better, stronger and funnier with him.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and relatives of Tony Tempah. It is a very difficult and sad time.
Jason Cundy added, “Well said, Andy. It hit us hard and was one of the highlights. I loved it when I saw his name flash and enjoyed talking to him.
“You always used to get something out of him, it was never bland. You never really knew what you would get, but he’s grown to love us, I think that’s fair to say.
“He listened almost every night and you could tell because he was referring to shows he didn’t call.
“He was a huge Liverpool fan like you said his dog was called Shankly. We will miss him. This is truly devastating news for the Sports Bar.
“Many listeners will know exactly who Tony Tempah is. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family and there is no doubt that he will be missed.
