Not only is the film project personal for DJ due to his Samoan background, but the character he plays in the film is also based on one of his family members. The studio likely reserved and highlighted an inspiration for the character Maui who fulfilled the physical characteristics of a demigod-like physique. According to “Final Boss”, Maui is based on his maternal grandfather. In the caption of his latest Instagram post, Johnson revealed: “It’s so fun to be MAUI again – a character that changed my life in so many ways – including the character of MAUI inspired by my late grandfather, the great chef Peter Maivia.»
