The 2022/2023 football season has finally arrived – and what a relief to find the beautiful game.
Because we don’t care how much you tell yourself you like to feed off transfer rumors and ‘take a break’ from football, ultimately there’s nothing like the action densely packed and fast.
Moreover, it is a World Cup year. So, in addition to the usual club season attractions, we can expect even more madness as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo get their last chance to secure football’s ultimate crown.
In the spirit of things, then, here at GIVEMESPORT, we’ve decided to try our hand at predicting who will win 11 of the biggest competitions to come over the next nine months or so.
Will Man City retain their Premier League crown? Could Barcelona usurp Real Madrid in La Liga? Can anyone else in English football who isn’t City or Liverpool lift a trophy?
Let’s dive in…
HUMILIATED (The football terrace)
world Cup
We will start with the biggest of them: the famous World Cup.
There are a few teams that look like particularly strong candidates to win the trophy in Qatar this winter.
France is always a scary proposition. Likewise Brazil, who seem to have grown as a team since losing to Belgium in the 2018 quarter-finals. England can also claim to have what is arguably the deepest team in the competition in terms of quality.
But Argentina’s staggering unbeaten streak of 33 plus games is enough to suggest to us that they have every chance of going all the way.
Their talisman and ultimate footballing GOAT Messi was inspired on the international stage and, if the way they beat Italy 3-0 in the so-called ‘Finalissima’ is anything to go by, La Albiceleste have their best chance to lift the trophy since the days of Diego Maradona.
Winners: Argentina
Champions League
Like most football, the Champions League is particularly difficult to call.
Liverpool are an obvious candidate given they have reached three incredible finals in the past five years.
But, much to the horror of Reds fans around the world, we’re actually urging rivals Man City to finally get their hands on the old ‘Big Ears’.
From our perspective, the addition of Erling Haaland could be a huge factor in helping them get through those crucial knockout matches.
And while we think Liverpool have traditionally been more suited to cup competitions under Jurgen Klopp, they have found themselves scoreless in every major final they have appeared in last year.
Pep Guardiola is simply too good a manager not to get his hands on European silverware at some point and we believe this is his year.
Winners: Manchester City
Europa League
An interesting puzzle to unlock this. Manchester United and Arsenal certainly have a very real shot at European glory here, but we’ve picked a curve ball that could prove tough opposition to anyone.
Jose Mourinho’s Roma have made giant strides in the transfer market this summer, signing none other than Paolo Dybala and early Georginio Wijnaldum.
Sixth place in Serie A last season doesn’t flatter them, but they have lifted the Europa Conference League – displaying a strong European pedigree in the process.
Plus, with Mourinho at the helm and an impressive squad under him, you know he has the potential to put Roma in contention for big trophies.
Winners: Rome
premier league
If you’re a Liverpool fan, don’t get too upset about the City for Champions League suggestion just yet, as we also predict the tables will be turned and the Reds will win the domestic league title in 2022/ 2023. .
Jurgen Klopp and his recruitment team seem to have hit the nail on the head this summer and their squad depth now looks better than ever, while City have left two of their best forwards in Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus to move on to new pastures .
Sure, you could say Haaland completes that loss, but with his injury-prone nature he’s bound to spend at least a few weeks on the sidelines – and that time could prove costly with the small margins these two leave themselves at the end of the season.
Liverpool also looked a lot cleaner in the Community Shield and we fancy them starting the season with a bang.
Winners: Liverpool
FA Cup
So can anyone else really lift a trophy that isn’t one of England’s two dominant forces at the moment? We think so, and we fancy Antonio Conte’s Tottenham doing it here.
They’ve made some very shrewd signings with the war chest provided by their ownership group – Ivan Perisic and Yves Bissouma in particular – and while we think the league is a step too far, third place and an FA Cup would be a dream of a season for Spurs fans.
The first major trophy of Harry Kane’s career has arrived!
Winners: Tottenham
Ligue’s cup
On the other hand, we believe arch-rivals Arsenal will claim the League Cup honor this year.
Mikel Arteta withdrew a World Cup by bringing in Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko from his former club.
The Brazilian in particular could be instrumental in any success they achieve this campaign – his seven pre-season goals will tell you…
Straight into the fantasy team.
Winners: Arsenal
Championship
A notoriously impossible minefield to cross if you ever want to place a bet or predict a winner, so we’re going to play it safe and be a little boring here.
Norwich have won the competition the last two times they have been in it. Dean Smith is also a top manager and was unfortunate enough to be sacked at Aston Villa, so we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and help them get back to the big time.
We’ll also roll them back to come right back down, but, you know…
Winners: Norwich
the league
Real Madrid scored a La Liga/Champions League double last year and looked a real force at the end of the campaign.
However, we still have doubts about the aging nature of some of their star players.
Meanwhile, Barcelona, for all their off-field issues, arguably haven’t looked so good in years when it comes to their squad setup.
Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha could be a match in heaven, and let’s not forget they also boast Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ansu Fati, Ousmane Dembele and more.
We go bold and back the Blaugrana to come back with a vengeance.
Winners: Barcelona
Bundesliga
Do we have to say a lot about the German elite? Bayern Munich, Bayern Munich, and uh, Bayern Munich again.
They have won 17 league titles since 2000, as well as their tenth in a row last time out.
If you ever had to literally put your house on something – and we strictly advise against doing such a thing – then this would be it.
Although you would probably only win around ten dollars anyway…
Winner: Bayern Munich
A-series
AC Milan have propelled rivals Inter to the Scudetto in 2021/2022 after a close affair.
Of course, Inter have now brought Romelu Lukaku back into the fold and if he can replicate past form for the club, well, that’s really the game – although we have to admit we have our doubts. that it’s going so well after his Chelsea disaster. .
Juventus have also made big signings in Paul Pogba and Angel Di Maria, so it remains to be seen if they can elevate the Old Lady into contention.
But we’ll stick to the Rossoneri for our tip. Rafael Leao could play an important role in his further development and is certainly one to watch ahead of a potential Premier League move next summer.
Winners: AC Milan
League 1
Just like with the Bundesliga, we’ll jump right in and call this one – Paris Saint-Germain.
It’s simply impossible that a team with Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe up front won’t win the French League.
Winners: Paris Saint-Germain
