With nostalgia at the top of the beauty forecast for the coming year, it seems every vintage (ish) trend is experiencing a renaissance. In 2021, there were only butterfly clips, fragmented bangs, and a reflective shine – but now we’re stepping back a few years in retrospect into the era of upper deck hair.
Arguably one of the earliest displays of creative coloring, the top deck hair involves a blonde top section and brown underside – much like the Cadbury block of chocolate it shares a name in. It’s a trend that started in the early 2000s before ombre and balayage took hold, but thanks to a celebrity revival courtesy of Miley Cyrus, we wonder if a mass comeback is imminent.
Cyrus has always been a hair chameleon, but this latest look is a significant change. Her go-to stylist – Aleksey Bishop of Nine Zero One salon in Beverly Hills – shared several snaps of the transformation, characterized by choppy platinum blonde top layers and a rich brunette underside. Made even cooler with shaggy bangs, that’s basically all we need to welcome top deck hair into our lives with open arms.
