As the coronavirus continues to spread around the world, tens of thousands of people have been infected in dozens of countries. The disease, known as COVID-19, originated in China, which has the highest number of confirmed cases to date, but it now affects all continents except Antarctica.

The number of cases increased considerably after the start of monitoring for the virus in late January. The sharp increase on February 13 is due to a change in the way China has diagnosed and counted the cases.

South Korea has the highest number of infections reported outside of China. Italy, Iran, Japan, France and Germany are among the other countries that have seen substantial increases in recent weeks.
