Ritchie passed his test at the Tyne & Wear LGV Driver Training Center and will return in the future to undertake their Category C+E licence.

As a thank you, he even bought a selection of cakes and treats for the staff at Build A Bake, a bespoke bakery in Jesmond, Newcastle.

For the Newcastle star, these months promise to be uncertain.

The 34-year-old is coming to the end of his career at the top level, with his contract at St James’ Park expiring this summer.

Although no official decision has been made on his future, Ritchie has struggled to gain playing time this season after starting just one match in all competitions.

But with uncertainty over his role, a number of Newcastle fans have joked that he might stay after all.

“New contract for Ritchie as team bus driver,” wrote one Toon fan.

A second said: “When they said Ritchie might get a coaching job I didn’t think they were talking about driver.”

Meanwhile, a third fan said: “When we told him to park the bus he took it literally, fair play.”

Ritchie joined Newcastle eight years ago in the summer of 2016 and has since made 213 appearances, scoring 25 goals.
