One of the directors David Fincherthe most popular films of Se7en. The director recently discussed restore neo-noir film in 8K for its recent premiere in 4K on the Chinese Theater’s IMAX screen. From his comments, it seems that Fincher has emphasized what makes Seven so special in the first place. Fincher reunited with some frequent collaborators to make this restoration possible. Peter Mavromates, who frequently oversees post-production on Fincher’s films, scanned the original film negative and placed it in 8K. Special effects and color corrections were also rendered in 8K, although they had to be toned down in 4K.
Here’s what Fincher had to say regarding the 8K remastering of the film in an interview with IndieWire:
“It is what it is, warts and all. And some of them are spectacular and some of them are things I would change or fix today, but I didn’t want to get involved in that. He There are a lot of imperfections, there are a lot of things you don’t see in films. When people say they like the look of the film, they’re talking about chaos, entropy and chaos. Now, of course, we live in an HDR world where you get these kinds of really deep, rich, velvety blacks for free and we had to negotiate what to fix or not. of repairing to match and repainting things and just removing water spots and little edge flashes And some if it’s impossible to match, certainly by today’s standards. had a lot of digging.
“Se7en” is a 1995 “volumetric capture”
It’s clear that Fincher knows what he’s talking about from his comments. As a director, there has to be a fine line when it comes to restoring earlier films, especially those made almost 30 years ago. Fincher undoubtedly has an eye and a talent for knowing what makes his films work, as well as why they work. He also highlighted how Se7en is “a volumetric capture” of actors at this stage of their career, i.e. Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth PaltrowAnd Kevin Spacey.
Warner Bros. should release a 4K Blu-Ray of Se7en on May 3. Fincher confirmed this news last year. While all of the attention to detail that Mavromates and Fincher put into their restoration won’t make it to the format, fans will surely be excited to see a retouched version of this classic film. Fincher’s remarks will likely be understood by viewers, even on a much smaller television screen.
