Many will agree that LineageOS is the most popular custom ROM in existence today, with over 1.7 billion active installations. What makes LineageOS such a popular project is the ability to bring new versions of Android OS to older, unsupported devices.
This year, although a little late, the project should bring the new Android 10 operating system to a myriad of devices like LineageOS 17.1. By this time last year, the developers had already released the official versions of LineageOS 16.0 based on Android Pie for 30 devices.
On the brighter side, it looks like the next version of LineageOS 17.1 based on Android 10 is imminent. Sure, there are many unofficial versions of this ROM based on Android 10, but to date there is still no official version for any device.
Not long ago, the LineageOS team released a list of devices that will soon receive nightly versions of LineageOS 17.1. The likes of Fairphone 2, HTC One M8, Moto Z and even the Galaxy S4 are on the list, although the first versions have since been removed “due to some signature issues”.
In the midst of all this, the owners of Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 + find themselves unattended, officially and unofficially. In the first case, we already have the answers and we just got details on the last case.
When asked if the Galaxy S8 Android 10 update could be expected as the official LineageOS 17.1 at some point, the LineageOS team had a cryptic response, as shown below.
As part of the decryption of the above answer, it should be noted that the Galaxy S8 and S8 + did not receive the official update of LineageOS 16 based on Android Pie, but they did get the unofficial version.
Typically, devices that receive the previous LineageOS update have a chance of getting an update the next iteration. The fact that the Galaxy S8 and S8 + missed the official update of LOS 16 could mean that the duo also misses the official update of LOS 17.1.
On the other hand, the recent list of versions of LOS 17.1 had new names joining the project for the first time, namely the LG G5 unlocked in the United States and the LG V20 worldwide. So does that mean that the update for the Galaxy S8 Android 10 could arrive via the official ROM LOS 17.1? Probably.
Even better, the unofficial version of LineageOS 17.1 is already up for grabs. But don’t get too excited since the two also received the unofficial version of LOS 16 but never got the official version.
