Nicki Minaj will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2022 VMAs. The superstar will also perform at the event for the first time since 2018. The 2022 VMAS will air live August 28 and can be watched on The CW, in addition to BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TVLand and VH1.
“Nicki broke down barriers for women in hip-hop through her versatility and creative artistry,” Bruce Gillmer, president of music, musical talent, programming and events, Paramount+ said by Variety. “She changed the music industry and cemented her status as a global superstar with her crossover appeal, genre-defying style and continues to be unapologetically ‘Nicki’.”
Nicki is a 17-time VMA nominee and a five-time VMA winner. She won her first award in 2011 for “Best Hip-Hop Video” and this year is nominated in the “Best Hip-Hop” category for her single “Do We Have a Problem?” with Atlanta rapper Lil Baby.
Nicki shared her excitement with her fans via Twitter, writing, “I receive the Video Vanguard Award in 2022 ! You don’t want to miss my performance – Sunday August 28 at 8 p.m. @MTV Aaaahhhhhh.”
Previous recipients of the award are: Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Kanye West, Rihanna, P!nk, Jennifer Lopez and Missy Elliott.
