With Auto China 2024 launching later this week, get ready to experience a wide variety of eye-catching concept cars. MG will be in Beijing to present the EXE181 concept, an electric hypercar with a single seater. Sitting extremely low to the ground, the stunning EV feels like one of those Vision Gran Turismo cars.
The teardrop shape contributes to a remarkably low drag coefficient of just 0.181. Although this is lower than the 0.199 of the Volkswagen XL1 and other production vehicles, there have been even sleeker concepts throughout history. For example, the 2022 Mercedes Vision EQXX had a Cd of just 0.18. Going further back in time, the General Motors Precept 2000 had a drag coefficient of 0.16. Additionally, the 1980 Volkswagen Aerodynamic Research had a Cd of 0.15. Not to be overlooked is the 1954 Fiat Turbina with a remarkably low 0.14.

The new MG EXE181 is a modern equivalent of a namesake concept from 1959. The UFO-shaped car before it was supposed to have an even lower Cd of 0.12. The “British” brand owned by Chinese SAIC Motor claims that it is not only one of the most aerodynamic cars on the market, but also one of the fastest. It only takes 1.9 seconds to reach 100 km/h from a standstill.
The Lucid Air Sapphire recently did it in 1.77 seconds, but at 60 mph instead of 62 mph and with a one-foot rollout. Last year, the Rimac Nevera took 1.74 seconds to get the job done. Elon Musk promises the new Roadster can hit 60 mph in less than a second, but honestly, we have a hard time believing it.
As for top speed, MG doesn’t say, but it does mention that the EXE181 “challenges the land speed record.” The original concept from the late 1950s managed 254.91 mph with American racing driver Phill Hill at the wheel.
The extremely narrow interior with a central seat and racing harness is equally futuristic while reminiscent of the single-seater Lamborghini Egoista. The new EXE181 has been designed with a yoke incorporating a large screen suggesting that the car is equipped with four electric motors. Although MG remains tight-lipped on other tech specs, we can safely assume all-wheel drive and a combined output of well over 1,000 horsepower.
The chances of seeing a production version are probably slim to none, as this seems more like a one-off, spectacular affair intended to grab headlines, which it succeeded.
