The National Review Commission appointed Top Gun: Maverick as his best film of 2022.
The sequel starring Tom Cruise also won Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography.
The Banshees of Inisherin won three awards, including Best Actor (Colin Farrell), Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson), and Best Original Screenplay for Martin McDonagh.
Steven Spielberg won Best Director for The Fabelmanswith the film’s Gabriel LaBelle winning a breakthrough performance alongside Until starring Danielle Deadwyler.
Michelle Yeoh was named Best Actress for her lead role in Everything everywhere all at onceand Janelle Monáe won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Knives out after Glass Onion.
The award for Best Adapted Screenplay went to In the west, nothing is newby Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell.
Marcel the shod shell was named Best Animated Feature, with close take the best international film; Sr., about the father of Robert Downey Jr., named best documentary; and women who talk to be recognized with the best ensemble.
“Top Gun: Maverick is a thrilling crowd pleaser that is expertly crafted across the board,” NBR President Annie Schulhof said in a statement. “Tom Cruise, Joseph Kosinski and the entire film crew managed to make an incredibly popular film that brought audiences back to theaters, while being a true cinematic achievement.”
The organization’s honors are voted on by a group of moviegoers, professionals, scholars, filmmakers and students.
NBR has a mixed record as an Oscars predictor. Last year his best film was Licorice Pizza, which earned three Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. In 2020, his best film was Da 5 Bloodswho ultimately landed only one Oscar nomination, and in 2019, NBR selected The Irishman, which garnered multiple Oscar nominations but no wins. Previous winners of Best NBR Movies include green paper (2018), The post office (2017), Manchester by the sea (2016) and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).
This year’s NBR winners will be celebrated at an awards gala at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City on Sunday, January 8, hosted by NBC News’ Willie Geist.
