McIlroy, who has won events around the world, says he would like to see the Australian Open and South African Open given high status because of the quality of the courses and the level of interest in these countries.
The 34-year-old would also like to see top players playing more regularly in countries like Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan as part of a world tour which he believes would resemble the current Formula 1 calendar.
“Whether they are alternated on the new world circuit or we choose the same ones every year, I agree with both,” he said.
“The Australian Open, for example, should almost be the fifth major tournament. The market there has huge potential. They love golf. They love sport. They have been deprived of high-level golf. And the courses are so good.
“The South African Open is another one I would have in the mix. Then there are places like Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan. Which market is Japan. That would be another opportunity.
“We could end up with something akin to Formula 1, but with a bit more American presence.
Add in the four majors and you have a brilliant schedule for the top 70-100 players, no matter how many there are.
“We would have, say, a 22-event calendar. That would sound pretty good to me.”
