Normally we don’t pay much attention to promotional videos from Formula 1 teams. But Lewis Hamilton playing racing games from the turn of the millennium is different. These are games that we all have a lot of nostalgia for, just like Hamilton, who managed to find time to play the likes of F1 2000And Gran Turismo. It’s the latter that we’re most looking forward to seeing the seven-time champion play.
Inserting the disc into a PlayStation 1, Hamilton immediately chose a Midnight Purple R33 generation Nissan Skyline GT-R and set off for a race at Trial Mountain. A connoisseur’s choice, if we do say so ourselves. While GT1 had a nice selection of 37 cars in its arcade mode, the GT-R was one of the best. In reality, those early games were defined largely by the Skyline GT-R. Buying one in the game’s career mode has always been a good investment, as any hardcore gamer knows. It seems like Hamilton really knows the game.
You might be wondering why not a Mercedes? The German automaker only joined the franchise in Gran Turismo 2. (Hamilton’s future employer, Ferrari, did not show up until Gran Turismo 5.)
Hamilton also seems to like the color purple, and a social media video from 2022 shows that he also likes the Skyline GT-Rs. In this video he drives an R34 generation rental GT-R, but this car was released after Gran Turismo Launched in 1997.
If there were any lingering doubts about Hamilton’s car-loving bona fides, there should be none. His choice of Gran Turismo the car shows that he is one of us.
