Zack Snyder has revealed that he approached Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio for the role of Lex Luthor in his 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The filmmaker, who has directed three big-budget films based on superhero characters from DC Comics, said he had a meeting with DiCaprio during which the Oscar winner shared several ideas about the project. He even made a suggestion that was later included in the film.

During his appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Snyder discussed meeting Leonardo DiCaprio, where he offered him the role of Lex Luthor. The filmmaker said: “He actually had a lot of good ideas just in the meeting. I think in the end he was like, Hey, I don’t know. But he was really smart when it came to the material and really smart when it came to the character.
“In many ways, I think he was the one who mentioned this idea of Superman fighting the Justice League to me at one point,” he added.

The role of Lex Luthor, Superman’s nemesis, was eventually played by Jesse Eisenberg in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which followed Snyder’s 2013 film, Man of Steel. The director also addressed rumors that he wanted to cast Tom Hanks or Adam Driver for the role.
“I think I talked to Adam on the phone, yes,” Snyder said. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice starred Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Snyder’s latest film is Netflix’s Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver, the sequel to his 2023 title Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire.
