Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp claimed their missed opportunities were their “obvious” problem after their Premier League title hopes took a major blow.
The Reds were beaten 2-0 by Merseyside rivals Everton, leaving them three points behind league leaders Arsenal with four games remaining.
Liverpool managed seven shots on target at Goodison Park, but it was yet another case of them lacking a clinical edge in front of goal.
It was the same in their 2-2 draw at Manchester United and their shock 1-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace, and Klopp believes it is an issue that needs to be addressed.
Speaking to talkSPORT after the defeat to Everton, he said: “I really think we should just try to win football games by playing better, more convincingly, using our chances.
“That’s obviously the problem over the last few weeks, I think it’s obvious. We create, we don’t use them often enough.
“At the end of the season it’s obviously not great because the first thing you need is results, for that you have to score goals, you don’t have to concede, that would also be helpful. Yeah, Nothing good to say about it today.”
One huge chance in particular fell to Darwin Nunez, who had a clear shot on goal, but he couldn’t fire his effort straight at Jordan Pickford when he arguably should have found the bottom corner.
The Uruguayan is Liverpool’s second top scorer all season with 18 goals, but club legend Jamie Carragher doesn’t believe he can produce when it counts.
Speaking on the missed opportunity, he told Sky Sports: “The chance Nunez misses before half-time, it’s unforgivable at this level.
“These guys [Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge] “I know a lot more about it than I do, but it’s not acceptable at this level, especially when Liverpool are aiming for the title.”
Carragher later said there was a “real discussion” with new Liverpool manager, who could be Arne Slot amid open negotiations, over the future of Mohamed Salah when his contract expires in the summer next.
However, he doesn’t think it’s the same when it comes to Nunez: “I think I’m at the stage now with Nunez where I don’t think there’s a question to ask.
“I think after two years at the club, and I’m probably guilty of this, you want him to succeed so much, there’s so much of what you like because he gives everything.
“He runs, he causes trouble, he scores goals, he gets an assist, but after two years now and when Liverpool are going for the title this season, in these big games you need your man to score.
“At Old Trafford, at Goodison, in the European match at Atalanta. There is no time to wait, it is not October, nor November, it is the business end of the title race .”
Premier League title glory was all that remained for Liverpool after FA Cup and Europa League exits, but that now seems a distant possibility.
Only three points separate them from Arsenal, but with the Gunners looking strong and Manchester City still capable of taking top spot, that could be out of reach for the Reds.
