AC Milan won Serie A and, thanks to the league triumph, qualified for the UEFA Champions League. InterMilan, Naples, and Juventus have qualified for the European apex competition thanks to their top 4 finish. Three of the aforementioned clubs are hoping for a failure by Benfica in the UEFA Champions League qualifying round.
According to our information, a total of 600.60 million euros must be distributed among the qualifiers according to their ranking. Higher-ranked clubs will receive a better share of the amount. Benfica’s qualification will lead to a deduction of the amount due to the two Milan clubs and Napoli.
Benfica are paired against Danish side, Midtjylland for the third qualifying round. However, the Portuguese giants ruined the dreams of Italian clubs by beating Midtjylland 4-1 in the first leg. It is unlikely that the Danish side can turn the game around.
Italian clubs have underperformed in the UEFA Champions League over the past decade
Juventus are the only Italian club to have reached the UEFA Champions League semi-final since 2012. AC Milan, Inter Milan and Napoli have all eliminated most often in the group stage or in round of 16. Atalanta have reached the quarter-finals in the unprecedented COVID-19 season.
However, other than that, Italian teams have been disappointing in the competition. The Spanish and English teams have dominated over the last decade with 8 of the last 10 finals involving a Spanish or English club. There have been four instances in which the final has been an all-Spanish affair or an all-English affair.
It shows that Italian clubs have their work cut out for them when it comes to European competitions. Due to the poor performances, Benfica’s qualification will result in a deduction of at least €1m for each of the three clubs in question.
It seems likely that the clubs will lose €1m as Benfica have a 3-goal advantage over their rivals. Nevertheless, the Italians hope that the clubs will improve their performance in European competitions in the coming seasons!!!
