Huawei’s Pura 70 series, with its sophisticated camera technology and sleek design, made a splash in the smartphone market on Thursday.
The Shenzhen-based company’s Pura series highlights sophisticated cameras and a sleek look, different from the Huawei Mate series focused on professional use.
Huawei’s Mate 60 series, touted last year by Chinese state media as a success in the face of U.S. sanctions, rivaled Western tech titans with an advanced Chinese processor.
According to CNA, the Huawei Pura 70 series, renamed simply “P”, includes the 70, 70 Plus, 70 Pro and 70 Ultra, starting at 5,499 yuan (US$760). Pro and Ultra were released on launch day; however, the Plus and Basic models will be released on April 22.

Sell like hotcakes
From the first minute of sale, the Huawei online store sold out the Pro and Ultra models. Hundreds of enthusiastic buyers lined up at Huawei’s flagship stores in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, demonstrating strong demand.
Huawei officials have warned customers that high demand could delay device purchases. Customers at a Shanghai flagship store have been forced to unbox and register their gadgets in-store, possibly to avoid resale at high prices.
Following the launch of the Huawei Mate 60 Pro in August, Huawei saw a 64% year-over-year increase in smartphone sales in the first six weeks of 2024, according to Counterpoint. In contrast, Apple’s iPhone sales in China fell 24%.
Ivan Lam, senior analyst at Counterpoint, forecasts 60 million shipments of Huawei P70 series this year, increasing Huawei’s smartphone sales. He predicts strong early sales and channel supply issues, but less so than when the Mate 60 launched.
Huawei’s Kirin 9000S processor, apparently made by SMIC, shows China’s technical growth despite US export bans on chip manufacturing. The chip’s appearance shows China’s resilience despite cuts in semiconductor manufacturing.

Huawei’s recent financial report in Shenzhen showed a net profit of 87 billion yuan ($12 billion). Strong sales and product improvements fueled the rise. The Chinese tech giant’s sales rose nearly 10 percent to 704.2 billion yuan ($97.4 billion).
Huawei’s rotating chairman, Ken Hu, said the company’s financial results met expectations and “managed to grow.” Huawei made money by selling other businesses in addition to its core business.
Huawei’s rising profits coincide with rising technology and security concerns between the United States and China, with American companies barred from doing business with Huawei due to punitive sanctions. Google semiconductors, software and services have limited Huawei’s device options.
Notably, Huawei has focused on cloud computing and digital transformation solutions for many industries to address these issues. Its cloud computing segment generated 55.3 billion yuan ($7.7 billion) in 2023, up 22%.
Despite U.S. restrictions on Huawei’s consumer segment, smartphone sales soared 17.3% in 2023. Advanced processors from Chinese semiconductor maker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation powered the Huawei Mate 60 series of smartphones.
