There’s often some overlap between the Record and Song of the Year categories at the Grammys, which confuses some people, even though it makes sense. For a record to be really great, doesn’t it have to be brilliantly written? Song of the Year goes to the people who actually wrote the song, and while the singer and/or band is usually involved, that’s not always the case.
As with Record of the Year, there are a few submissions that are almost certain to be nominated, such as Adele’s “Easy on Me”, Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul” and Harry Styles’ “As It Was”, although it’s only three cups, and since last year there are 10 places to fill.
Here are my predictions for the 10 nominees for Song of the Year at the 2023 Grammys.
Predictions:
Adele – “Easy With Me”
Beyoncé – “Break My Soul”
Brandi Carlile – “You and Me on the Rock”
Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz and the Cast of Encanto – “We’re Not Talking About Bruno”
Harry Styles – “As It Was”
Kendrick Lamar – “The Heart Pt. 5”
Lady Gaga – “Hold My Hand”
Steve Lacy – “Bad Habit”
Taylor Swift – “Too Good (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault)”
Zach Bryan – “Something in the Orange”
In addition to the aforementioned Adele, Beyoncé and Harry Styles, former nominees like Lady Gaga and Brandi Carlile could once again compete, although their places are not guaranteed. Big hits from Kendrick Lamar and Steve Lacy could also easily find a place in this category, and theater prodigy Lin-Manuel Miranda could earn his first nod with the ear verse “We’re not talking about Bruno ” from the animated film. Encanto.
We wonder whether or not Taylor Swift is eligible for her single “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault)”. Although the singer-songwriter shared it with voters for inclusion, it’s unclear if he’s even truly eligible. The original version of the cut was released over a decade ago, but Swift doubled down on it for the reissue of her R album.ed. The new edition went straight to No. 1 and received critical acclaim, but is it “new” enough to be nominated? No word yet, so the world may have to wait for the full list of nominees to be made public until we know for sure.
Also possible:
Billie Eilish (“TV”), Dove Cameron (“Boyfriend”), Em Beihold (“Numb Little Bug”), Joji (“Glimpse Of Us”), Justin Bieber (“Honest”), Lauren Spencer-Smith (” Fingers Crossed”), Lizzo (“About Damn Time”), Maren Morris (“Circles Around This Town”), Muni Long (“Hrs & Hrs”) and SZA (“I Hate U”).
The nominees for the 2023 Grammys will be announced on November 15.
