Ellen DeGeneres Addresses Toxic Workplace Controversy After Making Stand-Up Comeback – TOI Etimes

Ellen DeGeneres is returning to the comedy scene following the end of her talk show, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” which ended in May 2022 amid allegations of a toxic workplace. The 66-year-old comedian returned to Los Angeles for a stand-up gig, where she spoke about the aftermath of the controversy and its impact on her life and career.

During her performance, Ellen joked about how the accusations changed her public image and even made light of the experience, stating, “The hate went on for a long time and I was trying to avoid watching the news .The ‘be nice’ girl wasn’t nice. Despite the humor, Ellen admitted it was a difficult time and the backlash left her struggling mentally and professionally.

In 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were reports of a toxic work environment at the “Ellen DeGeneres Show.” A BuzzFeed News article cited anonymous statements from several employees, alleging incidents of racial microaggressions, a toxic workplace, and unfair treatment, including the firing of employees for taking medical and bereavement leave. Although Ellen DeGeneres was not directly involved, the controversy attracted significant scrutiny and criticism, culminating in an internal investigation by Warner Media.

After her talk show ended, Ellen stepped away from the limelight to focus on her personal life. In her stand-up performance, she shared that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, spent time “keeping a low profile” to recover from the intense backlash. It took a long time for Ellen to feel ready to return to the entertainment industry.

Ellen DeGeneres’ recent stand-up concert at Los Angeles’ Largo at the Coronet Theater was part of her new tour, “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour.” This is his first public project since the conclusion of his talk show. The official tour schedule lists upcoming shows in Los Angeles in June, with additional dates on the West Coast. Although it’s unclear if this tour will be her final comedy project, Ellen’s return indicates that she is ready to move forward after the difficult times she faced.
