English pair Jodie Ewart Shadoff and Georgia Hall have enjoyed strong starts at the Chevron Championship under the management of American Lauren Coughlin.
Coughlin, 31, holds a first-round lead for only the second time in his career.
Ewart Shadoff and Hall both posted opening-round 70s, finishing the day two under and four shots off the lead in women’s golf’s first major tournament of the season.
World number one Nelly Korda is in a three-way tie for second place at four under.
The American is trying to become the first woman since Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) to win five consecutive starts, and only the third in LPGA Tour history, tied with Nancy Lopez (1978).
Korda was immediately behind when she spotted a bogey at the par-four second, but she quickly calmed down with four birdies before the turn.
Another bogey on 10 slowed her progress before birdies on 14 and 17 helped Korda claim a share of second place alongside compatriot Marina Alex and Japan’s Minami Katsu.
“I didn’t think it was going to wear me out as much as maybe mentally,” Korda said, referring to his streak of competing in three consecutive events last month.
“I still feel a little tired, so it took me a while to get going. I felt the nervousness at the start of the round.”
Leader Coughlin rode superbly around the Club at Carlton Woods course, collecting three birdies on the front nine and repeating that feat on the back nine.
Northern Ireland’s Stephanie Meadow shot a 71 and sits alongside English amateur Lottie Woad, who just won the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur earlier this month.
Last year’s champion, Lilia Vu, withdrew just before her start time as the American continued to struggle with a back injury.
