The BMW X2 is the sportiest and most elegant alternative to the subcompact X1 and the compact X3. In the top-of-the-range M235i trim, the pint-sized crossover offers 301 horsepower (225 kilowatts), all-wheel drive and an aggressive look. But reports suggest BMW may take the X2 in a slightly different direction by 2023.
With an all-new BMW X1 slated for 2022, a new X2 could appear the following year with many of the same features. We’ve already seen the X1 in spy photos (pictured below) showing its larger size and multiple powertrain options: gasoline, plug-in, and fully electric. The new X1 will use a modular front-wheel drive architecture (with all-wheel drive available as an option), and depending on AutoBild, the X2 should adopt almost all of these same signals.

When the new BMW X2 arrives in 2023, expect it to be larger than the current model. The modular architecture under the X1 is larger, so expect the X2 to increase slightly as well. Gasoline and plug-in powertrains are expected to debut on the X2 early or at launch, with the option of a fully electric iX2 joining the lineup down the line. The new plug-in model is expected to overtake the current X2 xDrive25e, which offers an electric range of 35 miles.
Stylistically, the new X1 and X2 will have larger kidney grids, however, these kidneys extend horizontally unlike the gaping vertical units of the 3 and 4 Series. Spy shots of the X1 show that the new kidney grids of these two crosses probably extend horizontally rather than vertically. Both crossovers will also get slim LED headlights and taller parking lights underneath, something similar to what we’ve seen in spy photos of the X7’s upcoming facelift.
Unfortunately, we won’t know all the details until the new BMW X2 officially appears, probably at the end of 2022. As for the new X1, we could see this crossover as early as this year.
