It’s always sad when we lose an author’s film. And with Tarantino’s personal limit on how many films he’ll make, it’s especially sad to miss out on a film he was planning.
When The film critic was announced as Tarantino’s tenth and final film, it was the subject of a tornado of rumors. Everyone wanted to know on what note the famous director was going to go out.
We had a fervor for casting ideas and plot elements, then we learned the heartbreaking story of how the film was abandoned.
So today I want to go over what we learned and what the plot of the film would be in perspective.
Let’s go.
Quentin Tarantino passes up “The Movie Critic” as final film
When Quentin Tarantino announced his plans for The film criticwe were teased by the story of a cynical and disillusioned film critic writing for a pornographic magazine in the 1970s. It could have followed his journey to redemption or a deeper exploration of his psyche.
People have compared the idea to Taxi driver and suggested it be Paul Walter Hauser or comedian Shane Gillis. We know he met Olivia Wilde for undisclosed reasons, was it to star in this film or just to chat? Hard to say.
But then we had an attachment to Brad Pitt, and people wondered if he would come back to play Cliff Booth, from Once upon a time… in Hollywood later in life.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter has a full breakdown where it shows the pivot of this genre of film, towards a possible metafilm with a “goodbye metaverse” from Tarantino.
So what would that have looked like?
Well, Tarantino could have included actors from his past films reprising roles or appearing as fictionalized versions of themselves, perhaps even transitioning into new narratives via “movies within a movie.”
And as the owner of a few theaters in Los Angeles, we could have seen them all come together at the New Beverly or the Vista. Or maybe there would be a younger Tarantino character, who would be influenced by the people he meets and then grow up to make films.
There was no limit to what it could be, and it seems that after some thought, Tarantino decided to abandon the project altogether and go back to the drawing board for his tenth film.
This means we have no real idea what he wants to do. And we can’t know when he’ll come back with another idea.
Tarantino is one of the most important working filmmakers and part of a generation of original filmmakers who would be sad to lose. I hope he takes his time and does what he wants next, whether it’s next year or a decade from now.
I can’t wait until the era of Quentin Tarantino is over.
