Victoria Mary Clarke said she was recently left in “floods of tears” following a sweet gesture from her close friend Johnny Depp.
Taking to social media on Wednesday, Shane MacGowan’s wife Victoria said she was “very grateful” to Depp.
Shane died at the age of 65 on November 30, 2023 following a long illness and spent most of the past year in hospital.
Johnny Depp has been close friends with the couple for years and even serenaded them at their wedding in 2018 and spoke at Shane’s funeral.
The actor invited Victoria to the London premiere of Jeanne du Barry, a period drama in which he plays King Louis XV.
It is the 60-year-old’s first major role following his high-profile defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard in the US in 2022.
Writing on Instagram, Victoria said: “I’m so grateful to @johnnydepp and @in2_film for inviting a whole team of us to see #jeannedubarryfilm at the premiere in London.
“To be honest, I found it triggered my emotions so much that I left in tears!
“I didn’t realize it was such a tragic love story and JD and Maiwenn are world-class actors, so I guess it’s only natural that they would react emotionally !”
She added: “If you haven’t seen it, be sure to check it out, Maiwenn is a superb director and the cinematography is sublime. Congratulations to everyone who worked on this film and I really hope it gets the success and recognition it deserves.
It comes as Victoria last month thanked her supporters for a “magical” tribute concert to Shane and Sinéad O’Connor in New York.
A tribute concert to Sinéad and the Pogues frontman took place at New York’s iconic Carnegie Hall, attended by members of Shane and Sinéad’s family – with Victoria Mary sharing a sweet snap of her dancing with Imelda May, which she says gave her the courage to speak at the concert.
“Thank you so much to everyone involved in the tribute to @ShaneMacGowan and Sinéad O’Connor,” Victoria Mary wrote on Twitter (X). “@CarnegieHall is magical and it was truly beautiful. Special thanks @ImeldaOfficial for giving me the courage to give a speech!’
