Chromecast with Google TV recently received Android 12 update with some exciting new features. They include the ability to block microphone and camera access, Quick Connect for Wi-Fi, pre-installed TikTok, and more.
However, reports suggest that users are facing some issues after updating the device to the new firmware.
For example, we recently highlighted an issue where the Google TV HDR feature stopped working after the Android 12 update.
And now many have noticed (1,2,3,4) that USB audio routing is suddenly not working on their Chromecast with Google TV.
It should be noted that prior to this update, users could utilize the device’s USB audio routing capabilities.
Many report that they cannot hear anything from connected audio equipment.
“I used to send audio to an external DAC via USB and it worked perfectly until yesterday’s update, anyone else having this problem?”

“After updating to Android 12, Google quietly dropped USB audio support. Their support response is horrible, they left thousands of people with USB audio connections without any support, they dropped features that have been present for years.

While the feature worked well before the update, Google never made it official. It looks like they silently removed the feature that was previously available to the general public.
According to a user, the option to enable or disable USB audio routing was previously available in the Google TV Developer Settings. However, the option is not found now.
Many who have ever invested a considerable amount of money in their entertainment setup are frustrated because it is suddenly dysfunctional.
I mean, I understand their emotions very well. Imagine spending time, effort, and money building your own mancave only to find that an update has made it obsolete.
It seems that the problem affects all types of USB audio devices such as speakers, DACs, audio extractors, etc.
For some, their DAC shows that a connection has been made, but the sound is not working.
I connected my DAC to USB via a USB-C hub.
My DAC shows a connection but no sound.

Unfortunately, Google has yet to comment on the issue where USB audio routing not working on Chromecast. Since the feature was never officially released, it’s hard to say if it will ever return.
We hope Google will take note of customer feedback and share an explanation behind this decision. We’ll keep an eye on this matter and update this story to reflect noteworthy information.
