New updates are added at the bottom of this story …….
The original story (published March 27, 2020) follows:
The update journey of Mi A3 Android 10 has been quite hectic. After much confusion over the availability of the software, the OS was finally pushed to a small set of Mi A3 units at the end of last month.
Less than a few days after launch, several reports of users who had problems with the fingerprint scanner began to appear. To control the amount of damage that the Android 10 buggy update can cause, Xiaomi quickly halted the deployment.
The company spent a few weeks fixing the issues in the first Mi A3 Android 10 update and when things were in order, deployment resumed. This time, new security from March 2020 has also been added to spice things up.
For the most part, we thought things were going as planned, especially after the official download link appeared online for those wishing to upgrade to Android 10 manually.
But then the unexpected happened. Yesterday we started to see reports of a new software update for Mi A3 owners who had already received the update to Android 10. The update changelog mentioned the March patch – the same which was part of the latest version of Mi A3 Android 10.
As seen above, the OTA package is huge enough for a simple security patch. More interestingly, users couldn’t install the update on their Mi A3 devices. And then a few moments later, we encountered new reports that Xiaomi was rolling out new updates based on Android Pie for the A3.
As of this writing, the new updates are available for the global and European variants of the Mi A3 as versions 10.3.16.0.PFQMIXM and 10.3.17.0.PFQEUXM, respectively.
In the end, these packages are pushed to Mi A3 units that do not yet receive Android 10 and not an option to return from Android 10 as we had previously reported. Admittedly, this means that the recent OTA deployment of the Mi A3 Android 10 update has been halted, hence the Pie-based OTAs.
[Mi A3] I just received the March security update, does anyone know when I will receive the A10 update?

With all this, one wonders what Xiaomi really does, although it seems clear that the update for Mi A3 Android 10 OTA is no longer pushed, hence the decision to deploy a new security patch for those who are still on Pie in March.
Since April is almost here, these units had to go through with the latest security patch, so Xiaomi had no choice but to push the Pie-based patch as they fix the Android 10 version for those who don’t haven’t received it yet. As for when the deployment will resume, no one knows.
