Scottie Scheffler overcame a neck injury and a five-shot deficit in the final round to become the first player to defend the Players Championship.
The American, who had neck physio during the second round, shot a bogey-free 6-under 64 to win the 50th edition of the PGA Tour’s flagship tournament.
Scheffler won by one of 20 shots under fellow Americans Brian Harman, Xander Schauffele and Wyndham Clark.
All three missed putts to force a play-off in a phenomenal finish at Sawgrass.
Harman was first, pushing a 17-foot birdie putt wide as he closed with a four-under 68.
Schauffele, who led overnight and for much of the final round, missed with his 60-footer, while Clark’s 20-footer circled the hole and stayed on the green.
