Over the past few seasons, Russell Westbrook has bent the triple-double to his will, rewriting the league’s record books at an astonishing rate.
And on Monday night, in his 38th game as a Wizard, Westbrook passed Darrell Walker for the franchise lead, recording the No.16 triple-double with Washington – and No.162 overall – in spectacular fashion.
By the final whistle, Westbrook had racked up 35 points, 14 rebounds and 21 career assists in the Wizards’ 132-124 win over the Pacers. It was just the third time in league history that a player surpassed 30 points, 10 rebounds and 20 assists: Oscar Robertson (32-15-20) did so on December 11, 1961 against Chicago; Magic Johnson (32-11-20) turned on each other on November 28, 1988 in Philadelphia. The only Wizards player to achieve a triple double of 20 points and 20 assists was Rod Strickland (21-12-20) on February 10, 1998.
Overall, Westbrook has now equaled Oscar Robertson as the only player with five seasons of at least 15 triple doubles.
