Referee Benjy Esteves suffered a wardrobe malfunction during a super flyweight undercard bout on the Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia bill.
David Jiminez scored a surprise victory over John Ramirez to win the WBA “interim” belt at 115 pounds in the third fight of the evening.
It was a physical affair that required the referee to pit the two men against each other on several occasions.
During one of those exchanges, near the end of the contest, Esteves tore the back of his shirt as he separated Jimenez and Ramirez from each other.
“And we have a Benji Esteves wardrobe malfunction, the ref blew the back of his shirt, you’ll see it when he turns around,” Todd Grisham said on DAZN commentary.
Ramirez entered the competition undefeated at 13-0, but suffered the first defeat of his professional career via unanimous decision with scorecards of 117-111, 117-111, 116-12 in favor of his opponent.
Jimenez was the deserved winner as he outplayed Ramirez inside a disjointed, complicated, but nonetheless entertaining affair.
The first few rounds were pretty close, but by the eighth, Jimenez was in complete control as he picked up the pace and pounded Ramirez’s face into a bloody pulp down the stretch.
Immediately afterwards, Jimenez said: “You know, I am a hardworking man from Cartago [Costa Rica] I came from nothing, this is the second time I’ve done it [pulled off an upset].
“This is going down in the history of my country, thank God, my manager, my promoter and Golden Boy…
“My corner told me I had to work inside, so that’s what I did.
“I had an amazing camp in Las Vegas and they kept reminding me what to do, so I kept doing it.”
With the win, Jimenez improves to 16-1 while Ramirez drops to 13-1.
Jimenez is now in a strong position to fight for the WBA world title against champion Kazuto Ioka.
Before the loss, Ramirez was ranked No. 1 with the major sanctioning body.
